On my recent Thailand vacation, after staying in Bangkok for three days, we flew over to Phuket and made it our new home base. From there we started island hopping.
We went to Koh Phi Phi by fairy – it’s about two hours. From there you can book a boat and go to the very famous and beautiful Maya Bay, where “the Beach” was filmed.
I think it looks totally magical. Avatar world.
Buuuuut, and here is the but. All people you’ll come across will warn you not to go there. That it will not be worth it because it will be so crowded that you can’t even take one picture. Hordes and hordes of tourists, all in a very small place, will make it look like a festival or open air concert. It’s just too touristy, they said. It’s too basic. Everybody goes there. Don’t waste your time on it.
Does this look to you like I wasted my time? Haha 🙂 If I was this character to ever listen to people and put their opinion and advice over my own, I would not have had half of the fun and success I did in life 🙂
So I tell you a trick. Don’t go with the first morning fairy from Phuket (around 9-ish) like everybody else does, but go with the one at night and stay there over night. And grab the first boat around 4.30-5.30 in the morning to go to Maya Bay and all the other small islands and you will be fine. There will still be a lot of boats but not even close to what will happen a few hours after that when the first people fromPhuket arrive.
And also as the morning light is still soft, it’s beautiful for pictures!
So this was the early morning leaving Koh Phi Phi for Maya Bay in a small fisher boat, around 5 am. The peachy sunrise colors though!
Here we were slowly arriving at the first Avatar mountains.
I totally look like a James Bond girl in this one 🙂 There are actually also the so called “James Bond islands” but they look quite similar to the ones from “the Beach”. I need to watch this movie again to recall everything and compare 🙂
So after Maya Bay we still had around four smaller islands to visit and had short stops at each of them.
The water was very cyan and not deep at all! Here you can see how:
I fed colorful fish like those from find Nemo with pineapples straight out of this fisher boat and they loved it!
We had lunch at this place near the harbor and I figured that “morning glory” is my fav dish next to green curry, but unfortunately it’s considered breakfast. So I made it my mission to find places that serve it all day, kinda if you’re looking for dinners with all day breakfast 😉
Aaaaaaand last but not least: This (the left house) was really our hotel. Isn’t it cute? Haven’t seen such a cool tree house hotel before. And it had some stars, 4 or 5 I remember. Everywhere were hills and it was quite hard to walk, a couple minutes downhill was the reception with a crazy stalking amount of supervision displays and at the end, right at the edge was the restaurant and a bar with an infinity pool and a look all over the island. I will try to find out the name for you guys.
Hope you enjoyed! :-*
